Considering a career as a sports agent? It’s definitely an up and coming field. As players’ salaries skyrocket, so do the salaries of agents. But, how do you know it’s a good fit for you? Here are some reasons people make good sports agents. If they sound like you, then it might be the right career for you.

1. You’re a sports nut. You don’t need to be a nut about all sports, but if you’re a nut about at least one, you might be a great sports agent. Guys who love a sport, and know lots about it, but know they can’t make a living as a player often make the best agents. It lets you make your career out of the sport you love, which usually means the job doesn’t feel like work.

2. You don’t take no for an answer. Sports agents must be great negotiators. If you can’t negotiate great deals for your clients you won’t be able to keep them and you won’t be able to get new ones either.

3. You’re ok with being a salesman. Much like commission sales in any field, if you don’t get contracts for your athletes, you don’t make any money. You must be comfortable with this type of salary to be a good agent.

4. You have a thick skin. Very talented athletes are often hard to deal with prima donnas who expect everyone to jump at their beck and call. You need to be able to work with people like this, and even make them happy, to be successful. In addition, sports agents are not always highly regarded. You need to be able to handle having a reputation as a greedy shark.

5. You love a fast paced, high profile life. This job is not for the guy who wants to stay close to home and raise a family. You need to love travel, media and being in the hot seat to like a job as a sports agent.

6. You work hard. Being a sports agent isn’t easy, particularly at the beginning. You’ll be traveling to rural places, trying to get a chance to represent some young kid who just happens to be a great athlete. His first contract, if you get it, won’t be very lucrative, so you won’t make much money. Unless you’re willing to work hard at cultivating clients and negotiating deals, you won’t make it.

7. You’re a fast learner. Many sports agents have law degrees. Those who don’t have to quickly learn the ins and outs of negotiating contracts and legalese. There’s a lot to learn, and while a sports management degree will teach you a lot of what you need to know, you need to be able to pick up new skills as you go along.

If all of these traits are yours already, you’re a great candidate to be a sports agent. Successful sports agents enjoy very high salaries, travel the world and get to be a key part of the sport they love.
